Research

My group and I have put a lot of thought into what we needed to accomplish the recreated music video, we thought about the choreography, dancers, costumes and props. We did this because we didn't want the video to look amateur but also so we could be organised.

Roles

In our group we have assigned each person to a specific role so that we could be able to work efficiently and and fast. The roles :
  • Katrina - Camera Woman
  • Joyce - Director
  • Joana - Britney and Choreographer
  • Sephora - Make-up artist and Hair stylist
  • Fernanda - Costume
We decided to give everyone their own roles as it would be clearer about what each person had to do and it means that the group could come together and put forward ideas about their section.

As Joana was the choreographer she was in charge of finding the dancers and making sure she knew the dance in the music video so she could make it her own and show it to the other dancers.

Sephora also had to know what the dancers looked like so she could re-create the look in her own way for the dancers and out Britney. Fernanda also had to know the music video well so she could re-create the costumes in a similar way of the girls in the video.

Joyce's role in the Britney video was to make sure that everyone knew what they were doing and when they were doing it and she also gave pointers on how to make things look better to out Britney and dancers.

My role as the camera woman was to make sure I knew all the different camera angles in the music video and to make sure I used the camera angles when recording the our version of the usic video.

Question 2

Analysis of Britney Spears ‘Hit me Baby one more time’. Explain why this is a good music video and highlight why it is memorable. Why is it unique?

Even though Britney Spears "Hit me baby one more time" came out 15 years ago it still comes on and we still see the video being played on TV. This shows that the video and the song itself are memorable and very catchy.

In my opinion its a good video as its very dance/pop and its targeted at the teenage audience therefore they can relate to it as they would listen to this type of music, at the time the video was released the teenage audience dominated the views for music videos therefore this would would naturally be a hit.

The video was recorded in a school and is mostly made up of teens which are mainly young girls, they have a easy and simple routines that are easy to learn by anyone. I also think that the camera angles that were used were good, the close ups, medium close ups and long shots and birds eye view. I think that the fact that we used a birds eye view makes our video unique as in the original video they do not use the type of shots; they mainly use close-ups and long shots.

Question 1

Explain re-creaton task and your first response to it?

For this assignment we have been asked to re-create Britney Spears; "Hit me baby one more time". Instead of copying the video completely we have put our own twist on it.
I thought it was going to be hard because we had to get the dancers and get the dancing right. When i discussed how we would organise ourselves we said we would keep in some of the choreography, the costumes are very similar as we are having school uniform and the setting will be he same.

My initial response was horrible and I was dreading to do the video as I don't like the song because its annoying. I'm ready to talk on the challenge.

The video I chose was Beyoncé - I was here.

I chose this video because she speaks about how she wants to remebered in the world for the thing she done. This makes me think that she wants to be an inspiration to everyone and that she would like to make a difference to thoese who are inspired by her, to change their life and thee outlook on life itself. The video shows all of her accomplishment.

Whenever I listen to this song it makes me me feel like I want to know that people of family remember me for what I have done

I also like the video because it shows the success she has had and how she made it through hard work. But it also shows thins and people she cherishes most and it shows he fans which shows that they are important to her.

Question 7

This is the first camera type shot that my group and I used, (low camera shot) it was not as effective towards the audience the way we planned however we understood why, when first recording we used random shot types that we thought looked okay without actually thinking properly, but now I believe we have progressed a lot as we now know what shot types to use and where to put them to have the correct effect on the audience the way we would have originally planned.

When recording we thought clearly about the shot types, we thought together that this would be an effective ‘shot reverse shot’ because it is allowing you to see both character’s faces and get a real drift of how they are feeling, instead of one, it is allowing the audience to feel more a part of the clip. From this I was able to progress a lot as I found news ways of using this to my advantage.

In this screen shot, it from the most recent film that my group and I recorded, the name we decided to call it was/is ‘White Eyed Possession’. This is where we believed that if we didn’t just use shot reverse shot but changed it up a bit with a reflection of the characters letting them see the expression without having to change the angle the camera is in.

With this shot we thought it was the most effective, it is at the end of our horror film where you see the true demonic demon coming through the character, the extreme close up got the effect we wanted however we could have improved with the non-diegetic sound that was used. We progressed a lot than before but we can still do better.

Question 6

During the course of preparing and making my films I used a variety of different technologies. I used; YouTube, Blogger, Prezi, Final cut, Photoshop and Google.

We used Google multiple times for research and to gather film industry news and other things based on the film industry. We also used it to find images.

I created a blog, as I needed to have a place where I could put all my research and preparation for the horror film opening. I put links and tasks that I had done during the course on there such as the animatic.

We used it to complete the hardest tasks. We used it to do our animatic and to put together and complete our preliminary task and our horror film opening.

I used Prezi to address the plan for our horror film opening by using location, setting, costume, props and lighting. I also used it to outline the problem that might occur and how we could overcome them. We then presented it to put peers and we got feedback from on how to improve.

I used Surveymonkey to create my questionnaire and I also used it to post my questionnaire so I could find out what my audience wants.

Question 5

How did you attract and address your audience?

the link to our horror film voice over: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkG9yN5SYm4

I think that people should go and watch out film because it isn't your usual horror film that completely conforms to the stereotypes. Even though our film conforms to the horror film conventions in certain ways its still unusual when compared to other films.

A film I watched before was called Mamma. This film is a typical horror film because it has a family and that has been targeted by something eve and they all suffer in some sort of way. The evil character is jealous as it wants something it cant have and it takes its anger out on the innocent family. It creates mayhem and tortures them.

The trailer to Mamma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_f0G6wM_dE

Another example is the Blair Witch Project as it is the film we got out inspiration from. We used the hand held camera technique to give the audience the impression that it is a found footage and that it is based an a true story. However we used a couple of camera angels to construct it more and make it seem more realistic.

Trailer to Blair witch project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_Hw4bAUj8A

Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

This is Kiera she is 16 years old and lives in Clapham Junction. Kiera dresses in comfortable clothes that she likes such as jeans, tracksuits, jumpers and tops, she bases what she wears on what the weather is like. She likes going shopping and being with her friends. She shops at H&M New Look, Primark and BooHoo.

Kiera doesn't have a certain favorite genre, she watches films like Riddick series, Tangles, Fast and Furious series, Mamma and the Twilight saga. She watched these films in the cinema however she doesn't like buying DVD's.

I believe that my horror film would appeal to Kiera because she isn't a typical girl she's a tomboy so she likes watching things that are weird and gruesome. therefore i think that she would like our horror film as its has gruesome murders and it builds up suspension which will make her want to watch it.

Kiera and her family don't really watch TV as they are usually on their laptops or on the phone. When Kiera watches TV she usually watches soaps because they are full of unnecessary drama that she finds funny and she watches comedies and crime shows.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute you media product?

White eyed possession would have to be shown in Film Festivals as it is a small budget film, the one I would choose to show it in the British Independent Film Festival because it is a festival that promotes new film makers and gives them a chance to get recognized and they help the film be shown to all audiences including the UK. If the film caught peoples eyes in the film festival then they would distribute their film to them and the people who approved of the film would then distribute it to cinemas such as Cineworld and Picture House and Odeon. it then gets two weeks to be shown to the public and then after a couple of weeks they put it on DVD and networks such as Netflix.

Ourb company would seek to employ good distributors such as Universal or Warner bros. who are both good companies which good history in distributing films worldwide and being successful.

Our film shows that you don't have to conform to the stereotypical horror films and its stereotypes or use special effects to make your horror film and that simple horrors can still be scary. An example of this is the "Blair witch project". this film succeeded because of the tension created throughout the film. I think that our film should be showed in cinemas as it could be a huge success with the fact that it isn't the stereotypical horror and this could appeal to the audience.

the current films in the cinema are not horror films which means that it would be a good idea to show our film at this time as it would be a different genre of film. The fact that cinemas are showing films like comedies and romances means that people might get bored of them and want to see something different and a horror film would be perfect.

I would also show our film in small cinemas but also in well known and popular cinemas as it would increase our audience, I would also want our film to be distributed worldwide after its a success in the UK, this is because it would increase the numbers of viewers but also make the film known.

Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups.

Within the horror film that my group and myself put together we didn't really stereotype a specific social group of young teenager, this is because we didn't want to conform the conventions of a horror film but we wanted to challenge it and see if the out come was a good choice. There are no similarities that can be traced back to any other film as majority of horror films that I have seen in my lifetime have all been stereotypical and have the dumb blonde, the girl who can do no wrong, a stupid macho boy who thinks he can not get killed and then the others that are like extra’s that no one cares about.

Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The first frame is ‘setting/location’. This challenges and conforms the conventions of a setting/ location of an actual horror film. The way we act throughout develops the use of diegetic and ambient sound within a horror film genre. ‘Mama’ (Andres Muschietti 2008) uses the use of setting/location for the basis of the films plot.

The second and ninth frame is ‘camerawork and editing’, as well as a ‘special effect’. These frames conform and relate drastically towards the horror convention. The style and the way it is laid out is exactly how you would see it in a typical horror film lay out.

The third frame is ‘costumes and props’. It does not go against the conventions it conforms it instead. It is stereotypical that if a film is based around something demonic then the demonic things costume or probably has different colour eyes such as: red, white or black and they are not soft colours but are harsh. Such as ‘The Conjuring’ (2013) they use colours such as the ones mentioned before that helps conform horror films. Helping heightening the viewing experience.

The fourth frame is ‘The title of the film’. My film title sequence, ‘White Eyed Possession’, challenges the conventions of actual opening sequences. Our dialogue develops the use of technology within the horror genre. ‘Paranormal activity’ (Oren Peli 2009) and Scary movie (Keenen Ivory Wayans 2000). Both use simple props for the basis of their plots. ‘White Eyed Possession’ is a cross-over of these genres, and develops the use of technology by dialogue and sound throughout. The camera angles create tension which is able to draw the audience into the action, heightening the viewing experience.

The fifth frame is ‘title font and style’. ‘White Eyed Possession’ does not conform but it challenges the conventions of a horror film as the title and font style throughout the introduction, it is more of a theme you would see in either a comedy or an action film such as Hangover one-three or Fast and furious one-seven, both use roughly the same style of font. ‘White Eyed Possession’ is a cross-over of both of these font types and however it helps develop the use of font and style within a horror film.

Rough Cut Feedback 2

In out previous lesson we showed the class our updated our editing and adding titles that needed to be added, we was made to show our peers so that we could get feedback on what we did and things w improved on. two of our fellow peers both said that the liked the title effect they was used when showing the characters and who they were in order of importance and the way that it was displayed. it wasn't just anywhere it was thought of. they said it was positioned was very good as well as it wasn't a distraction to what was actually going on in the scene.

They also said they enjoyed the shaky camera effect that was used throughout, it was just put anywhere like if you had no idea what you was doing but it was done well enough to be put in places that it needed to be adding effect helping build that suspense that they could see. the shaky also wasn't a continued thing it was going on and on and on throughout the whole thing it was used only when needed.

An improvement that they gave us was that at the beginning of the film there was a bright flash after showing the director and that it should be changed of something different should be used as it is not a common thing that is used within horror film type genres.

However another peer named Luke had said that he liked the way it looked because it looked like a fluent transition between the two as it flowed nicely when starting the beginning of the Horror film introduction, without any interruption.

Classification

Certificate Classification

To determine our classification for our horror film we went to the BBFC website and looked at the classifications and what our film had to to have in it and what our film shouldn't have in it. This is a link to the website http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/15 that we used to determine our film classification.
We determined that our film was a 15. We chose this classification because our horror film contain violence, strong language and nudity, which is inappropriate for young viewers as they may think that they can behave the same way, also some young people may find some scenes disturbing.

Rough Cut Feedback

My group showed our rough cut of our horror film and we wrote down the feed back both positive and negative. Each group gave back their feedback.

One person said that the story line was good and the way we used the camera was good. however it would have been better to have seen more of a variety of lighting and they found it confusing with the heavy breath.
Also another person said that even though we said we wanted to change part of it, it made sense to her, the story line was clear and that the idea of the contact lenses were good as it showed that she was becoming possessed. however she thought that we should do the changes we planed so it showed Shariece leaving the room.

Another person from a different group said that the music went well with the scene and what was happening in it, that it didn't look forced (we didn't put on an act it was just as if the camera wasn't there) and we recorded things that were relevant. However, they said that we needed more camera angles as out rough cut was a hand help type of movie.

Another person said that the darkness, and the way we set everything out made it seem homemade and that we didn't know the video was there. But we could have more camera angles and we need to put the scene that we wanted to change in the movie so that it would make more sense to him.

Production Time Line

Production Timeline :

Jelly Babies

In groups of 4 we had to create a horror film using jelly babies. The jelly babies were used as characters and we had to use the horror movie conventions to create our horror scene. Using different materials, objects and the jelly baby characters we created a short horror movie scene and we incorporated the horror film conventions to make the scene more alive and exactly what is expected in a horror.

Settings
horror films are usually set in abandoned houses, dark streets, forests or in a small communities. The typical setting is basically an abandoned or isolated area that tells the audience that the characters involved in the film are in danger. We used this convention in our scene by making the setting a forest and an isolated area.

Characters
in horror films there has to be victims, villains, and the survivors. This is a typical convention in a horror film. Usually in a horror film blonde girls and nerdy boys are made to be the victims and the strong brave characters are usually the ones to survive the frightening situations. We used this horror movie stereotype in our scene by having the victims as a blonde girl and ginger boy and the other two brave characters as the survivors.

Sound
horror films usually include non-diegetic, diegetic and Foley sound in them. So we also included these sound types in our scene because we wanted to create tension but the diegetic sound also so that there was a naturalistic feel in the scene. There were also some silences to also build the tension but also to make the audience feel for the victims because they know something bad is about to happen.

The scenes are:

Horror Film Introducton

In my class I watched previous horror film introductions and there is a lot of various qualities that can make my horror introduction better that I have learnt from them. some of the videos had very good story line but couldn't perform it to their best ability because of difficulties such as light. Some of the videos were filmed at night and on the street in the woods and because of this there wasn't much light. also some of them I was not able to see properly because of the ongoing traffic in the background was so loud. From this I have learnt to think about lighting and to also make sure I bring some sort of light source and also not to record next to traffic.

Some groups used good camera angles which helped create the meaning of the film. They also used editing, sound, image and mise-en-scene for further effect. Also as well as having good use of these they also had good control over the camera by making it steady and shaky when/if needed.
I also learnt that you don't have to show death or blood to make it scary it could just be a guy who is scary by the way he looks and behaves as well as adding effects such as music to it. Also in the past horror film introductions I realized that some of them paid great attention to their costume and when to change it. This make it scarier as it flowed with the movie and made it more realistic.
While watching these I made notes of the most important things that they paid attention to as it is going to help me with my horror film introduction. Things such as:

You don't actually need to show the death to make it scary
Lighting is a difficult thing to do but will be good if we do it right
Bad acting will bring our grade down
Rushed scenes are bad
Using varied camera angles to create meaning is a good
Editing with sound is something we have to do
Including Mise-en-scene for effect is good
Editing is a way to make meanings clear
Steady camera work if necessary

Animatic and Feedback

Click here to see my animatic

My group and I prepared for our horror film by creating a animatic. To create this animatic we drew pictures scene by scene and then added sound affects to it and once we had finished the animatic we has to show the rest of our class so they could tell us how to improve it and the good aspects of our animatic.
One of our class mates said that the sound was good and that they fitted the animatic perfectly fitted to the scenes in the animatic. This was really good feedback and made me think that we knew how to use the technology needed when we was creating the animatic. Another class mate said that we have included every shot type and this shows that we know the terminology and their meanings. Also a group responded by saying that the animatic was good and straight forward and simple, however, they said that we would only be doing the opening to a horror film and that we should think about how much we are showing of the storyline. With this feedback I now know how to make our animatic better.

Prezi Presentation and Feedback

My group presented our idea for our horror movie opening. this is the feedback we got from our class mates.

This is a link to our Prezi presentation:
Prezi Presentation

Our story-line is a group of friends are going home after a party and they are hyper-active. There is a couple in this group of friends; the girlfriend goes to urinate and her boyfriend follows her and wants to progress their relationship. However she does not want to do it there and as a result he kills her.

One of our classmates feedback was about the fact that we were drunk in Clapham common, it would be a problem and if we never actually got drunk could our actors act it out to a good standard. Also the fact that we are underage is also a problem. We said that we had thought about this and the consequences and as a result we wouldn't be drunk but be hyper-active instead so we behave silly.

Another one of our classmates told us that the opening would be too short and that we should fill it out a bit more by showing the party; showing the girlfriend and the boyfriend having an argument and then the group of friends leaving the party. She said by doing this it would fill it out a bit more.

Also, one of her classmates elaborated on the fact that he would kill his girlfriend with no motive therefore she agreed that we should show the couple having an argument and the boyfriend becoming annoyed with her. By doing this it also fills out the opening to an appropriate length.

Another classmate said that we tried to show the whole story line of the film however, she said that we should only be doing the opening. She said that the story line could be that the boyfriend is a serial killer and goes around killing all his friends as it makes sense for the rest of the film and creates the sense of suspense to see how the others die.

Another classmate said that so the boyfriend (the killer) doesn't get suspected; we should give him a cover. For example he was taking his girlfriend home because she was tired and felt sick and was dropping her close to her house but had to leave as he need to be home. We decided that it would be interesting and would leave the viewer in suspense of what happened to the girlfriend and if he killed her or not.

Also, my teacher stated that the fact that we would have a knife is bad as it may seem like we are actually killing someone and she asked what would we do about the blood? We replied that we wouldn't actually use a real knife, we would buy a fake knife and fake blood from the party shop in Clapham junction.

In my opinion, I have taken on board all the comments and ideas my classmate gave me. As a result we will communicate and decide on the best idea that we will work with. For example we could fill out the opening scenes by adding things in like the party or we could show the boyfriend walking the girlfriend home. As a result of all the comments, feedback and ideas from my fellow classmates and my teacher I have a good idea of what I want to do, so I will be putting that idea forward to my group and discussing what we should do as a finishing product.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary task
As an assignment where we had to film a short story about fear. We had a group discussion and we decided our story line. We then did some story boarding designing our story scene by scene so that when it came to acting and recording it we would know what we were doing.

Story boarding
When I was story boarding with my group I learnt that sketching is good and that it doesn't have to be neat and tidy. It just has to be understandable. We also had to put what shot type, what props we wanted to use and the type of effect we wanted to give. This gave us a real insight to what it would be like to record considering the amount of time we had to record.

Recording
Even though we had fun recording our short film when we had finished and were playing the scenes over again the next day we realised we didn't have enough camera angles; as a result we had to re-film the whole thing again. However as we had gained experience filming we knew what to do and it was quicker and easier to film. During the recording we had our props and we knew our lines off by heart. When we were recording we used different types of shots such as high angle, over the shoulder, mid shot and others.

Editing
After we had finished recording we had to edit it on a programme called final cut. We had to click on all the clips we didn't want or select part of clips we didn't need and high light it in red so it wouldn't appear in the finished cut of the film. I then put the scenes we recorded into order to make sense and to give certain effects. We also shortened it to create more effect.

Horror Film Convention

Setting:
Horror films are usually set in abandoned houses, haunted houses, somewhere remote/deserted or somewhere that has a haunted past. A horror film is usually set at night because its harder to see things therefore it makes it scarier. When the director does this he/she means to create tension and make you jump but at the same time make your eyes glued to the film so you can see what is going to happen.

Characters:
Typical horror films have typical characters because they are classics and because we expect to see them as we are used to seeing what happens to them; when the director purposely lets you know what is going to happen to them your natural instinct is to shout and scream at the character through the screen even though they cant hear you. The typical characters are; the innocent one who usually survives, the blonde who is the dumb one and dies first, the popular guy who everyone turns to for help, support and comfort and of course the killer who is the person who was hurt or has a hurtful past and wants to punish everyone or haunt them and tries to kill everyone.

Sounds:
Sound is important because it creates tension and builds suspense. The sound can be very different as it can be high pitched or low pitched, fast or slow and loud or quiet. Each one of these gives off a different feeling depending on what the scene is. Sound can also make the audience react because of the suddenness of the music and the way it changes.

Camera angles:
The camera and the way it is used plays a big part in horror films because it is used to capture the audience attention and is usually used to stimulate reactions out if the audience. There is a lot of camera angles but here are a few:

Point of view:
Which is when you are made to feel you are the character as you are seeing what they are seeing. This is a good technique because it makes you feel what the character feels and this is what the director wants.

Close up's:
Which is when you have a close up view of the character to see something specific such as their facial expression you would have the camera close to their face to see and understand their facial expression. This is good if you want to exaggerate the character and what you want the audience to see so they have an opinion or interpretation.

Low camera:
Angle is also good because it makes the character look overpowering as they seem big because you are looking up at them. The fact that you are looking up as if you are the character you feel how the character is feeling which would be small and unimportant and intimidated by the other character as they are much bigger. This is the directors intention.

Target Audience

The target audience I am trying to reach out is to 11-16 year olds as that is the age group that mostly watch horror films.

My target audience doesn't have a a particular type genre or particular type of film they like to watch. The types of film they enjoy are White chicks, Pitch perfect, Wild child and The host. As you can see they have a wide variety of interest with film as they are different genres and how they different directors create the story line.

This is a trailer that my target audience would watch:
Pitch Perfect Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q573_hDhTbE&safe=active

Most of the time they sleep, but when they are up and about in their house they also clean the house and do six-form coursework. When they have their spare time they go out with friends to go shopping, cinema, going out with family and going out with their boyfriend.

Most of the time, they travel by bus as it is free travel and it is easier. Also they walk to some places as it is not too much of a walk. The majority of them want a car as it is easier to get around instead of going by bus which has it downfall or getting their parents to drop them off.

Many people I know live in council flats, they are mostly aged from 11-20 as they or their families have money problems. However a few live in houses as they can afford as they have a stable job to support them and their family

Many people i know don;t have a favorite drink, but they like two drinks which are Coca Cola and KA. They like these drinks as they both come in many different flavors. Also many people my age like these drinks because of the fizz and it also gives people that boost of energy and they become hyper after you drink it.

My target audience does not have a favorite TV show. However they have a series of TV shows that they like to watch as it is humorous and entertaining. for example; some of them like My Wife and Kids, Fresh Prince as it is funny.

My name is Katrina Andrade and I am 16 years old and I attend La Retraite six form. I am a shy person when I'm not in a surrounding I know. I am a fun and relaxed person to be around and I have one younger sibling. I am a understanding, compassionate and different and I have a positive outlook on everything; I work hard and I get things done at a high standard; I always have a friendly attitude to others.

I have many interests so I am going to name a few. I enjoy swimming as I love being in water and my star sign is cancer which is a crab and crabs love to be in water; because of this people call me a water baby. I also like to draw in my free time. I watch anime so when I draw its anime like. I also like going out with friends to the cinema or the park just to relax. I'm known for helping others with their troubles and I am the person everyone comes to for advice on every situation.

I don't have a favourite film as I watch many films of many different genres. I watch movies such as the Riddick series, The host, Mama, The twilight series, Big Mommas house, Insidious, Alvin and the chipmunks series, Avengers series, Walking tall and the Fast and furious series. I watch these because I like them and I'm a weird person therefore I watch weird and things that are unexpected of me.

R'n'B, Hip Hop, Pop and others. I love a wide range of music because it all depends on the mood I'm in. I have a specific genre for each emotion I have. The songs I listen to reflect my life and the way I was brought up.

I love to read. I read many different kinds of books. For example I read books such as The Gallagher girls, The Twilight Saga, The Percy Jackson series, Harry Potter series, War Horse, Boy in stripe Pajamas and many more. I also read manga books and true stories such as conscience because you can feel their emotions and you feel as if you are them.

I watch a variety of TV shows. for example I watch X factor,  Britain's got talent, Fresh Prince, My Wife and Kids, Disney channel, cartoon network and many more. I watch them because I find them entertaining and they grab my attention because of the storyline.
